DSE's core purpose is to set the standard for managing natural resource protection and use, drawing on our capabilities in: policy leadership and innovation; knowledge, information and data sets and managing relationships with other agencies and the Victorian community. In 2007–08 the department employed approximately 2,500 staff, working in and around 70 different cities and towns across the state. DSE also employs around 800 project firefighters who work predominantly over the fire season, from October to May.
